Where I'm Coming From Doyle/Stokes 2/8/2011 Come on sugar take a ride with me Take a drive back through my history It starts with turn off a gravel road To a house tucked up in the corn rows We'll go in they're excepting us For a Sunday super I know you'll love I know this comes unexpectedly But there's a side of me I won't you to see Before go much further you should know and understand The people and the places what made me who I am I'm a brother I'm a cousin, a yessir yes mam down home southern son So before we go much further let me show you where I'm coming from While were waiting on mammas apple pies to cool We can walk the stone creek swimming pool Climb the oak tree jungle gym Take a swing on the tire hanging from the limb Don't seem like much when you look around But In my mind's eye it's hallowed ground Where the rooster sings to greet the day And the sun sets with amazing grace From an honest heartfelt feeling deep down inside It's a want you gotta have you do or die And that's why Repeat Chorus Tag So before we go much further Before we go much further So before we go much further let me show you where I'm coming from where I'm coming from Come on sugar take a ride with me Take a drive back through my history where I'm coming from where I'm coming from

Less Is More 03:16
Less Is More Johnson, Stokes, Wood Aug. 2, 2012 I aint Shakespeare I aint even Hallmark More like Eastwood No so much Bogart I get tongue tied Tangled up every time If I try to Romeo you with the perfect line Baby when it comes to love I know I don't say enough But It's all about quality over quantity Girl I hope you know your getting all of me part of me Wishes I could be more eloquent But I can't Catch my breath Listen at me there I go rambling I ought to take my own advice like I was trying to say before Maybe sometimes less is more I'm a hands-on kind of guy I like to let my actions speak So listen as I let my kissin' talk for me A simple I love you Is the best I can do Repeat Chorus Baby there's a million more others things that I wanna say but I'll stop Repeat Chorus

Consuela 06:18
Consuela James/Stokes/Wood Jan. 17, 2012 In the sand of South Sonora there's a pile of jagged stone The years have worn away the wooden cross it used to hold The coyotes sing the story of those dry and dusty bones While the lonesome desert wind howls harmony His name was Ezra Johnson from hills of Caroline A outlaw gringo drifter trying to leave his past behind Riding for San Pedro when Consuela caught his eye And his passion burned like brush fire on the breeze Chorus oh, can you hear him calling her oh, the canyons echo with his words oh, can you hear his desperate pleas Consuela come to me They kept their love a secret for Consuela was engaged To a jealous federale with a temper a dead aim They hatched a plan to meet outside of town and ride away Ezra waited but his Consuela never came Repeat Chorus Ezra rode back into town and found a crowd out on the street Around Consuela's lifeless body at that federale's feet And the townsfolk say nobody witnessed Ezra draw his gun Just the federale falling to the dust Ezra kneeled and picked Consuela up In the sand of South Sonora there's a pile of jagged stone The years have worn away the wooden cross it used to hold The coyotes sing the story of those dry and dusty bones While the lonesome desert wind howls harmony

about

Friends and Family:

I once heard a music publisher say (not one of mine of course) “Songwriters should take their first 500 songs and throw them in the trash. Then they’ll be writing songs worth hearing.” I can maybe agree with that in principle, however I never throw any of my songs in the trash. Because I’m a singer as well, I enjoy singing them. Plus, I’ve been blessed to co-write mostly with hit songwriters from the start - people like Walt Aldridge, Gary Baker, Brad Crisler, James LeBlanc, Lenny LeBlanc, and later Joe Doyle, Mark Narmore, Paul Nelson, Steven Dale Jones, Tracy Lawrence, Teddy Gentry...I’m not a name dropper, but there go a few. Lol

Not to mention countless co-writes with up and comers, never willers, almost wasers (like me), and just becausers.

I want to share with you “The Archives Vol. 1,” an abridged collection of original songs from my first years as a pro songwriter in Nashville, written or co-written from 2004 to 2012. Some are dusty publishing demos. Others came from custom projects where the original artist was kind enough to let me sing a version. It's a mixed bag of several genres. Because each track varies from the next, the best order I could think of was to list them chronologically. Some of these might have been previously available online at one time or another.

The shelf-life of this material is long expired. I wrote these back before music became a commodity - when a little money could be made from copyrights and recordings. I think my cowriters and former publishers could agree those days are nearly gone. I release these recordings under fair use for education and commentary and in appreciation for the collaborations they represent, as well as to showcase for my descendants some of my best works from my early years as a songwriter.

Every songwriter in the world could stop writing today and we’d have enough songs to last centuries. Good ones too. Maybe these songs are good. Maybe they’re great. One thing I know - these are some of my favs. I’ll trust the listener to decide for themselves.

Listed are co-writers and year of conception. I direct all inquiries to my admin Janice Jackson, Songs Of Travelers Hollow, Nashville, TN janice.jackson1@att.net.

It’s good to see these songs in the light of day after all these years, even if in the white-noise of the internet. They can now be found if sought after. Maybe enjoyed. Maybe to inspire others. Either way - they live. Lord willing, there will be more original music to come.

Collaborator Thanks:

To Walt (and Gary) for giving me a chance and a real start in Nashville.
To Adam, my childhood friend, for being one of my favs and most prolific collaborators
To Matt, our collaborations are many and represent my best work
To Brad, a great friend and inspiration
To Jami, one of the best troubadours I know
To Chaise, always interesting and uplifting
To all others connected to these songs - It was a pleasure working with you.

God bless,
Doug
